Évora is the capital of Portugal's centre-south region, the Alentejo. In the city's historic centre is the ancient Roman Temple of Évora (also known as the Temple of Diana). Nearby, whitewashed houses surround Évora Cathedral, a huge Gothic structure begun in the 12th century. The Church of St Francis has Gothic and Baroque architecture, along with the Chapel of Bones. In 1986, the city's historic centre was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. On Évora's historic centre in Praça do Giraldo, the ‘Man Without Fear’, who conquered Évora from the Moors in 1167.
